Discover India, one good question at a time

Read about India’s heritage, everyday meals and respectful visits, then practise useful Hindi before travelling. This section supports planning from Australia; using English or living in Australia does not determine the entry conditions attached to your passport.

Planning from Australia

Start with your departure city and local dates at every connection. Australia spans several time zones, so avoid using one assumed time difference throughout the journey. Match clothing and activities to the Indian region and travel month; the Australian season alone will not tell you what conditions to expect.

Keep costs in Australian dollars and Indian rupees, with separate lines for flights, accommodation and ground transport. For a road itinerary, compare journey time and planned breaks as well as distance. A familiar number of kilometres does not guarantee the driving pace you expect at home.

If walks or mountain stays interest you, identify the exact destination before requesting planning help. Save addresses and try the Hindi directions chapter. Read current Smartraveller advice, then confirm document-specific entry questions through Indian official channels.
