Chamoli became a separate revenue district in 1960. The Alaknanda and its tributaries are central to understanding its landscape. The district geography reference identifies the Nandakini–Alaknanda confluence at Nandprayag and the Pindar–Alaknanda confluence at Karnprayag.
Reading a mountain district
A river valley, a settlement and a district are different geographical units. Keeping those distinctions makes descriptions of routes and historical places easier to follow.
