A first trip to Kumaon is easier to enjoy when it has a few overnight bases instead of a long checklist. Lakes around Nainital, Almora's town life, the Jageshwar temples and Kausani's mountain views offer different experiences. Five days can connect a selection of them without pretending to cover the whole region.
This is an editorial itinerary starting and ending at Kathgodam or nearby Haldwani, not an official tour package. Adapt the first day to your actual arrival time and shorten the route when weather, road conditions or your companions call for it.
The five-day route
| Day | Plan | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kathgodam to Bhimtal; add Sattal only if time permits | Bhimtal area |
| 2 | Travel to Almora and keep the evening local | Almora |
| 3 | Jageshwar excursion; Chitai is optional | Almora |
| 4 | Travel to Kausani and leave an unhurried evening | Kausani |
| 5 | Return to Kathgodam without a long sightseeing detour | Departure or Kathgodam |
Day one: start gently by the lakes
After an overnight train, checking in and spending time around one lake may be more comfortable than driving between every named attraction. Bhimtal makes a useful first base for this version of the route. Sattal is an option, not a requirement, and a late arrival is a good reason to leave it out.
If Nainital's lakeside town and markets are your priority, stay there instead and drop the Sattal excursion. Choose the place where you want to spend the evening, rather than the longest list of lakes. Our comparison of Nainital, Bhimtal and Sattal explains that choice.
Days two and three: use Almora as a base
Keep the arrival afternoon in Almora flexible. A town hotel and a hillside property outside town offer different access to markets, parking and evening meals. Confirm how you will return after a walk. Himalayan views depend on visibility; a room description cannot guarantee a clear horizon on your dates.
Give Jageshwar its own excursion day. Time at the temple complex and stops on the road matter as much as the transfer. Add Chitai only if the day stays comfortable. Follow local rules about photography and entry. Read the Jageshwar introduction before arriving.
Day four: stay for the evening in Kausani
Kausani is known for its Himalayan outlook, so a night here gives the place more room than a quick photo stop. Arrange the following morning's departure before settling into the evening. Clear views still depend on the weather.
Baijnath is a separate excursion requiring travel time; it is not simply a stroll around your Kausani hotel. Leave it out if your group is tired. See Kausani's location and district when planning the route.
Protect the return day
Keep day five for the journey back. A navigation estimate is not a reliable train connection on a hill road. Allow for meals, traffic, road works and weather. If your train leaves early, reach Kathgodam the previous evening instead.
For a slower trip, remove Kausani and spend two nights around Bhimtal and two in Almora. With seven days, adding nights to these bases may be more rewarding than adding a distant destination. Munsiyari and the far eastern districts deserve a separate route with enough travel time.
Before confirming bookings
- Ask about steps, road access and parking at the actual property, not only its town name.
- Check what the vehicle quote includes: distance limits, parking and the driver's overnight arrangements.
- Check IMD Dehradun and local road advice close to departure.
- Leave enough time between descending from the hills and your train, or add a night near the station.
Does this cover all of Kumaon?
No. It introduces one part of the region. Champawat, Pithoragarh, Munsiyari and many valleys are outside this plan. Use the district and regional guide to choose a separate future trip.
