PNR booking status versus current status: read CNF, RAC and wait-list correctly

Your railway ticket can show a booking status and a current status at the same time. Which one tells you where the passenger stands now? The current-status column is the live answer on the official PNR enquiry, while booking status records the position when the ticket was booked. Reading both prevents a common mistake: treating an old wait-list number as today’s position.

Begin with the correct PNR

The official Indian Railways enquiry says the PNR is printed at the top-left of the ticket. Enter that number on the official passenger current-status page and match the train number, boarding date, origin, destination, boarding point and class. Do not rely on a screenshot forwarded days earlier. A genuine-looking screen can still belong to another date or passenger.

Booking status is the starting record

Booking status shows what was allotted when the reservation was made. It may contain a wait-list type and number, RAC, or confirmed coach and berth information. Keep it as the history of the booking. It does not freeze the reservation at that stage, because cancellations, quota handling and chart preparation can change the current position.

Current status is the column to recheck

The current-status column shows the latest state available to the enquiry system. Indian Railways notes that before final charts are prepared, current status might upgrade or downgrade later. This is why a result checked in the morning should not be turned into a promise about the final chart. Read the charting status shown on the same official result.

CNF, RAC and WL are different

CNF means confirmed; coach or berth details may appear after chart preparation. RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation. It permits travel under the applicable railway rules, but the accommodation shown can differ from a full confirmed berth. WL means waiting list and is usually followed by a number. Prefixes such as GNWL, RLWL, PQWL and TQWL identify different wait-list categories; they are not interchangeable.

Read one passenger row at a time

A single PNR can contain several passengers. Their current statuses may not be identical. Match each serial number separately instead of announcing one result for the whole group. Also check whether the boarding point differs from the origin printed in the journey summary.

A five-step check before departure

  1. Open the official PNR enquiry, not a prediction page.
  2. Match train number and boarding date.
  3. Compare booking status with current status for each passenger.
  4. Read the charting status and any remark.
  5. Check the train’s current operation separately; PNR status is not live running status.

Use our train number, station code and platform guide to avoid matching the right ticket to the wrong station name. Then open the official Indian Railways PNR enquiry shortly before travel and save the result for the group. The useful next step is not guessing a probability; it is reading the official current-status and charting columns together.
